The Real Truth Behind a Jewelry Appraisal

The Real Truth Behind a Jewelry Appraisal

At Debonairs Jewelry in Salt Lake City, we believe in educating our clients so they fully understand the value of their
jewelry. One of the biggest misconceptions in the industry is the difference between a jewelry appraisal and the real
resale value of a piece. For many, it can be heartbreaking to discover that their jewelry, once appraised at thousands
of dollars, may only sell for a fraction of that amount. Let’s break down the truth behind appraisals.

What an Appraisal Really Means
• Insurance Purposes Only – Most jewelry appraisals are designed for insurance replacement value, not what
a jeweler would pay you.
• Not Market Price – The appraisal number is often higher than the actual market resale value. It’s a protection
tool, not a guarantee of what you’ll receive if you sell.
Selling vs. Appraisal Value

When people decide to sell their jewelry, they’re often surprised to learn they may be offered less than a quarter of the
appraisal value.
• Scrap/Melt Value – If you sell to a gold buyer or pawn shop, your jewelry may be purchased for its scrap
value, meaning the gold is melted down.
• Spot Price Defined – The 'spot price' is the current market price of pure gold or precious metal, updated daily.
Jewelers or refiners typically pay 20–30% below spot, sometimes even less.
• Stones Aren’t Always Counted – Small diamonds or accent stones are often not factored into scrap offers.

When Brand Names Matter
Not all jewelry is valued equally. Some brands hold weight in the resale market: - Tiffany & Co., Cartier, Van Cleef &
Arpels – Highly desired brands with strong secondhand demand. - Condition is Key – A Tiffany ring in excellent
condition may fetch far more than the same diamond in a non-branded setting. - Desirability & Style Trends – Certain
styles go in and out of fashion, affecting resale value.
Why Appraisals Still Matter
• Insurance Coverage – Ensures your piece is protected at its replacement value.
• Verification of Authenticity – Confirms the legitimacy of your diamond, gemstone, or jewelry.
• Peace of Mind – Establishes documentation that your piece is real and valuable.
Tips to Keep in Mind
• Understand Purpose – Appraisals = insurance, not resale.
• Shop Around When Selling – Different buyers (jewelers, estate buyers, private sales) may offer very different
amounts.
