Why Trading a Natural Diamond for a Lab-Grown Diamond Is a Bad Bet

Why Trading a Natural Diamond for a Lab-Grown Diamond Is a Bad Bet

At Debonairs Jewelry in Salt Lake City, we proudly offer both natural diamonds and lab-grown diamonds. Each has its
place, and both can be beautiful options for engagement rings or fine jewelry. But we also believe in transparency —
and one trend we’ve seen in the industry deeply concerns us: customers being encouraged to trade in their natural
diamonds for lab-grown diamonds. Here’s why that’s not always a good idea.

A Real-Life Example
Recently, a customer traded a 1.5 carat natural diamond (good quality, worth around $4,500) for a 4 carat lab-grown
diamond. On paper, it looked like an upgrade — bigger size, lower cost. But here’s what really happened: - The 4 ct
lab-grown diamond is currently worth only about $900. - The customer was also charged $900 in making costs for the
new setting. - The original 1.5 ct natural diamond, with much higher long-term value, was given up in the process. - If
they were to sell the new ring tomorrow, the lab-grown diamond would have no resale value, leaving only the gold —
valued at scrap/melt price.

Why This Happens
• Natural Diamonds Hold Value Better – While not always an investment, natural diamonds carry rarity and
demand that lab diamonds don’t.
• Lab Diamonds = No Resale Market – Just like lab sapphires, lab-grown diamonds often carry zero resale
value. Once purchased, their worth is sentimental only.
• Predatory Sales Practices – Some jewelers market lab-grown trades as an upgrade while ignoring the
financial loss a customer takes.
• Hidden Costs – Customers often pay additional setting or making charges on top of the trade, further
reducing value.

The Honest Truth
We’re not here to knock lab-grown diamonds. They’re a fantastic option for customers who want a bigger diamond on
a budget, care about eco-friendly sourcing, or value appearance over resale. But trading a natural diamond for a lab
diamond is usually a bad bet. You risk giving up a stone with long-term value for one that may only ever be worth
scrap gold if resold.

Our Recommendation
- Keep your natural diamond. If you want to experience a lab-grown, purchase one outright rather than trading. - Ask
questions. A reputable jeweler should be upfront about resale differences. - Avoid pressure sales. If it feels too good
to be true (“4 carats for your 1.5 carat!”), it probably is.

Final Thoughts
At Debonairs Jewelry, we believe in education over pressure. Our goal is to help you make a choice that feels right
today and stands the test of time tomorrow. If you’re considering upgrading your ring, visit us in Salt Lake City — we’ll
walk you through your options honestly, with no hidden agendas
